NewArc.ai Meets Berlin Fashion Week: How Students of Macromedia University Harness AI

It’s official: AI is taking over prominent fashion shows across the world. But the best thing is, NewArc.ai is now a part of this change, too.

Meet Andrea Doering – a forward-thinking designer and educator teaching at several German design institutions, including Macromedia university in Berlin. This past semester, Andrea’s students were introduced to NewArc.ai to create an exciting project that ended up being showcased at Berlin’s Neo Fashion Week—a major exposure opportunity for these young designers.

“I proposed making animated fashion films with the help of AI,” Andrea recalls. Her students took the idea and ran with it, using NewArc.ai to turn their sketches into photorealistic digital designs. But that was just the start.

“In the end, they had their designs generated in NewArc.ai and animated in Runway. The videos were showcased at the Fashion week for hundreds of attendees. That was pretty amazing!”

From Sketches to Fashion Week

The process Andrea set up was all about getting the students hands-on experience — both with traditional design and AI. It kicked off with the students sketching their ideas by hand, then using NewArc.ai to instantly turn those sketches into detailed visuals. The instant feedback from the software got the students hooked.

“Generating in NewArc.ai is easy…but animating is still hard, so you have to work around that,” Andrea warns. Mastering Runway was an additional learning curve, but the students were enthusiastic to challenge themselves.

As a result, their fashion films were showcased at Neo Fashion Week – a special part of Berlin Fashion Week that focuses on student designers. “It was amazing to see their designs evolve from ideas to reality,” Andrea shared.

Teaching AI in the Classroom: Getting It Right

Andrea is very mindful about introducing her students to the latest tech, and never does it just for the sake of it: it’s important to fit every new tool into their organic learning process.

“NewArc.ai forces them to sketch, which is important because they don’t sketch as much as fashion students used to,” she explains. In her view, NewArc.ai strikes a good balance — it gives students control over their designs while still using AI to enhance and speed up the process.

Compared to other AI tools like MidJourney, NewArc.ai appears perfect for design because it keeps the focus on the students' original sketches. “In Midjourney, you don’t have the same control ,” Andrea points out.

“The best part is the instant visual result. People have something in their head, and NewArc.ai enables them to get that out in seconds,” Andrea concludes. It’s this kind of innovation that’s pushing fashion education into exciting new territory.
